I’m shamefully behind in stocking the data library!
So today I’ve added the Retrosheet BIP dataset. It consists of every AL/NL pitcher’s ball-in-play data, derived from Retrosheet, along with other performance data, for the seasons between 1912 and 2024. It comes with a codebook.
So have at it!
For fun, I’ve also posted files with the season ball-in-play performance of every AL/NL pitcher who threw ≥ 100 IP in a season, and the career BIP performance of every AL/NL pitcher who threw ≥ 1000 IP for his career. The performances include “BIP-ERA” and BABIPaa.
Of course, if you want to remind yourself of how the models were constructed to generated these stats, you can read latest version of BIP paper.
Let me know what you think, especially if you come up with your own analyses.
And stay tuned for more BIP-related data tools.
